Watermelon is a plant that originated from Africa. The fruit is a type of berry that has a thick rind which is usually color green or yellow. The inside is a fleshy, sweet and juicy meat that is typically pink or reddish. Other watermelons have orange, yellow or green flesh. The fruit usually contain small, flat seeds though some have been cultured to produce watermelon without it.
For people who are trying to grow watermelon, it is important to take note that crop rotation is important. This will ensure that the fruits will become sumptuous and flavourful. It is also important in producing higher number of perfect watermelons.
A particular area can be used and cultivated for one season of planting watermelons. It has to be noted though that after harvesting, another type of crops should be planted on the same soil. If watermelons will be grown on the same location the following year, the fruits might not turn out as expected—there will be less fruits to harvest, the plant would not be healthy and the fruits would not come out juicy and tasty.
Actually, the ideal place to plant watermelons is within a soil that has not been utilized for growing any type of vine-like plant. For at least three years, the soil should be free from any vine plant. That way, there will be sufficient nutrients in the soil for the watermelon to absorb.
This type of crop rotation is not just beneficial for the growth of the watermelon plant and fruits. It also keeps the soil more healthy. With proper crop rotation, the soil would have the chance to recuperate from the nutrients that have been absorbed by the watermelon plant and fruits.
Watermelons use up the nitrogen and all other essential nutrient in the soil as it flourishes. So planting it in the same soil next season will mean that the soil could no longer provide enough nutrients for the plant.
Soil replenishes the nutrients from decomposition of fruits, grass and even manure. This is a natural way for the soil to become fertilized again. This takes time to occur. So allowing the soil to be free from crops like watermelon can give far lot better results. There will be more fruits and making the plant grow is not too difficult.
When planting watermelon plants it is important to provide a sufficient amount of water but the plant should not get too muddy because this could damage the leaves and cause it to wilt. Ideally, watermelons should be planted on a hill. This way when the plant is watered, it will absorb the needed amount of water and the excess will be drained properly.
When it comes to ensuring a good harvest of watermelon, nothing beats proper crop rotation. Yet, applying organic fertilizer to watermelon plants is not a bad thing. It should be placed on the row after the vines, about one foot farther. This could contribute in making the plants healthy and allowing the fruits to become plump, sweet and juicy.
